Join us Thursday November 4th for a night dedicated to the evolution of preservation. Put the City Up Tear the City Down is a two-part virtual program on the values of the preservation movement which connects the historic to the contemporary through a selection of case studies and moderated discussion. What propels the life of a building and what defines its cultural significance?

The first portion of the event features two presentations, one by architectural historian Jack Quinan on the Larkin Administration Building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and demolished in 1950, and the second by Professor of History of Art and Architecture Daniel Bluestone, on the Garrick Theatre, a building designed by Adler and Sullivan whose demolition in 1961 launched Chicago’s preservation movement.

The second half of the night features a panel discussion on the future of preservation in Chicago with a focus on equity, heritage, and community engagement. Moderated by Bonnie McDonald from Landmarks Illinois, this panel brings architect Juan Gabriel Moreno, Chicago Commissioner of Planning and Development Maurice Cox and preservation advocate for the Muddy Waters House Chandra Cooper together in conversation.
