Dont Fret, one of Chicago’s most recognizable street artists, today announced the upcoming solo exhibition OFFICE SPACE FOR RENT, which will feature new works exploring the tropes, idiosyncrasies, and subtle politics of office life. The space that the exhibition inhabits, a for-the-moment unoccupied office while it’s former daily inhabitants work from home indefinitely, is its own commentary on the seemingly endless experience of limbo and uncertainty during a global pandemic. The artist’s prophetic style and wit shines through in the interactions of the characters he creates, whose unspoken thoughts become speech bubbles above their heads that no one would ever say aloud. The office’s storefront windows will be filled with a full-size painting of the erstwhile office workers, and those interested in leasing the modernized space can call 872-216-6781 for more details. Dont Fret’s recently released debut book, Dont Fret: Life Thus Far, will also be available for purchase. Advanced registration, timed entry, face masks and observance of social distancing measures will be required of all visitors to the exhibition.

The post Dont Fret: OFFICE SPACE FOR RENT first appeared on The Visualist.

Opening on June 9th at All Star Press, Chicago, the artists will explore the medium of printmaking — infusing each other’s distinctive styles in order to manifest truly unique creations.

The show will continue to Los Angeles and New York in July and August. Omnimodum offers a stronger sense of connectivity by linking each cities artistic community together. So join us. Be apart of the movement. Let’s make the world a more awakened place, one experience at a time.

“A town that can look, in the earliest morning light, like the fanciest all-around job since Babylon. And by that same night, south down State or north on Clark or west on Madison, seem as though the Pottawattomies had been the wisest after all.”
—Nelson Algren

Johalla Projects is pleased to present Big Shoulders, a major exhibition of original work by artist Dont Fret. In his third solo exhibition with Johalla Projects, Dont Fret takes on Chicago’s grit and beauty with a multi-layered display of his urban iconography, comedic wit, and street-wise sensibility. The exhibition will run from July 7 to August 11. An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 7 from 7-10pm.

Dont Fret’s wheat pastes and murals populate Chicago’s streets with biting reflections on the perils and disappointments of the human condition laced with a salty charm and glimmers of optimism. By maintaining an allusive sense of anonymity, Dont Fret is Chicago’s artistic “everyman” speaking for the diverse array of people who walk the very streets he illustrates. In recent years, Dont Fret’s practice has expanded across the nation, manifesting in pop-up projects, bars, ceramics, and large-scale installations. Big Shoulders is a return to his core, a visual poem dedicated to Chicago arranged in three parts.

The center of the immersive exhibition includes precarious furniture-like sculptures that display traces of the street, fragments from life, and discarded materials. Along the gallery walls, works on paper and mixed media wall installations present Dont Fret’s idiosyncratic figures, writing, and city scenes. Those who know his work closely may see recycled paintings or familiar photographs mixed into the new work that evokes a collapsed sense of time and space. This exhibition also includes more biographical works, with narratives and symbolic references that intimately capture the artist’s personal conflicts and reflections on his life. In this multi-dimensional exhibition, Dont Fret presents an urban ontology of his Chicago, of our Chicago, of the idea of Chicago.

Dont Fret is an artist born, raised, and currently working in Chicago. In addition to his wheat pasting, his practice includes drawing, painting, sculpture, performance and installation-based work both on the street and in the gallery space. He has produced large-scale public murals in a number of American cities including New York, Miami, San Francisco, and Denver as well as internationally in cities like London, São Paulo, and Berlin. His work has been in a number of gallery exhibitions nationally and internationally, with shows in Chicago, San Francisco, London, and Oakland. In 2014, he was included Paint Paste Sticker — the large Chicago street art survey at the Chicago Cultural Center. In 2016, his work was prominently featured in the Netflix original series “Easy.”

The post Dont Fret: Big Shoulders: Closing Reception first appeared on The Visualist.

We are all in this together: sharing the sidewalks of our neighborhoods, boundlessly pursuing our passions and, at the end of the day, trying to create a better world.

The single most important thing we can do with our time is to better understand each other, especially when so many of our ideas and concerns are one and the same. This exhibition is a collection of open thoughts as much as it is an invitation to join the conversation.

Galerie F has selected a fitting group of street artists to represent and illustrate the desire to see change in the landscape of our current circumstances.

These artworks unveil overlooked perspectives so that we are all empowered — no matter how contrasting our backgrounds may be from one another.

Johalla Projects is very excited to present Signs of the Times, a new exhibition of original works by artist Dont Fret. This presentation is the second show of his work in the gallery and marks his first major project with Johalla Projects since the successful, sprawling installation in the former Chicago Wholesale Hardware Store in August 2014. The exhibition will run from June 26 through July 31, 2015. An opening reception will be held on Friday, June 26 from 7-10pm.

The consummate wise guy, Dont Fret is best known for his wheat paste characters and musings that he places on streets in cities around the world. Stylized and distinct, these figures are simultaneously witty, sardonic, and oddly charming. They generally “belong” with the street or neighborhood where they reside and unapologetically point to larger themes of the locale or culture. The humor and bluntness of the characters’ thoughts or the artist’s standalone texts reconsider the obvious and invite the viewer to laugh, feel uncomfortable, or think twice. In this same sense, Signs of the Times tackles the tropes of living in 2015. The exhibition will feature works on paper and panel and includes a new selection of the artist’s own observations, truisms, and prescriptions that consider today’s own societal and social ails.

Dont Fret is an artist born, raised, and currently working in Chicago. In addition to his wheat pasting, his practice includes drawing, painting, sculpture, performance and installation-based work both on the street and in the gallery space. He has produced large-scale public murals in a number of American cities including New York, Miami, Grand Rapids, and Denver as well as internationally in cities like São Paulo and Berlin. His work has been in a number of gallery exhibitions nationally and internationally, with shows in Chicago, New York, London, and Oakland. In 2014, he was included Paint Paste Sticker — the large Chicago street art survey at the Chicago Cultural Center. Dont Fret was voted “Best Visual Artist” in the 2013 iteration of Chicago Reader’s “Best of Chicago” list and was also a featured artist at the SCOPE Art Show Miami Beach.

In collaboration with DON’T FRET, Johalla Projects is bringing the pop-up gallery to a new level. For the past several months, Don’t Fret has been working in a vacant hardware store located in Chicago’s Fulton Market District. On August 16th, this exclusive exhibition will open to the public for a one-night event — marking the final days of the building before demolition begins on August 25th.

Don’t Fret’s work — usually found on unassuming street corners in many cities — will canvas the building to feature some of his most impactful work. Inside, Don’t Fret invades the space to produce a rogue exhibition showcasing series of works from over the past two years.

Chicago-based artist Heather Gabel will also introduce a new body of work specifically for the pop-up event.

Featured in the CHICAGO READER as the best street artist in Chicago, Don’t Fret keeps a low profile but a prolific presence throughout the streets. In conjunction with the event, Johalla Projects produced a short artist film — a profile sneak peak into the life of Don’t Fret. The first official screening of the film begins at 11am on August 16th for members at the new Soho House Chicago. The film will be widely released in September 2014.

Building owners and donors Shapack Partners, Focus Development, and Atlantic Realty Partners are working with Johalla Projects to facilitate this exclusive event with artist Don’t Fret.

While many street artists seem to promote a blatantly rebellious or anti-authoritarian sentiment, Don’t Fret’s work is charming and blithe with hopeful undertones. A satirist and comedian, Don’t Fret can, through his work, make almost anything lighthearted and humorous by simply dictating the context. His almost poetic text overstates the obvious while his bright imagery and oddball characters set the scene.

His latest show, Love in the Time of Online Dating, will utilize his visual rhetoric and colorful characters to help create new landscapes that pointedly communicate the sometimes obnoxiously stereotypical goings on of everyday city life. The show will also include some conceptual and interactive pieces, as well as select pieces that were on view during the 2012 Scope Fair in Miami.

Don’t Fret is a human from Chicago. Known for his quirky and colorful characters, his work has graced walls in Chicago, San Francisco, New York, Miami, Sao Paulo, Berlin, Prague, and Munich in the form of wheat pastes and murals. Don’t Fret was part of the Chicago Readers “Best of Chicago 2011” winning “Best Use Of New Style In Old Art” and runner-up for “Best New Visual Artist”. Don’t Fret exhibited during this year’s Art Basel showing at SCOPE Art Fair.
