“Up and Leave” An exhibition by Aida Ramirez
May 31st – June 24th 2019 (37 S Wabash Ave)
Curated by Gabriel Chalfin-Piney

Humans are home bodies. We like to put roots down. We identify ourselves with our homes, whenever possible…

Up and Leave is a collection of works that plans for an inevitable migration, as well as maps out migrant travel that has occurred. Created by the gestural performance of travel, the maps reflect the migrant journey, made by Ramirez’s cousin, from Ocampo, Mexico, through the US Mexico border, and the final site where his body was found outside of Laredo, Texas. Knowing he was leaving his home forever, what would he have carried? The backpack and material collection includes the bare necessities needed to build a new home for when he would have arrived.

In the live performance of Up and Leave, Ramirez will reenact the leaving of home, dedication to carry only the essentials of one’s home, and the gesture of searching for a final location that is both planned and unplanned. This performance will take place through a processional, lead by the artist, from Buckingham Fountain by Lake Michigan to the LeRoy Neiman Center. An artist talk and reception will follow the performance.
