Soviefy / Zeta Tukana
@ Chicago Art Department
1932 S Halsted St, #100, Chicago, IL 60608
Opening Friday, May 31st, from 7PM - 10PM
Zeta Tucanae – is a nearby star, which may have been a life-bearing planet in its planetary system. If such a planet existed, soviet ideologues believed it would eventually be reached and colonized by humanity, living in the era of Communism. Current performance is a conceptual rendering of this phantasy through Omni-media salvaging of Soviet songs about:
human victories over space and nature.
environment and conservation.
Performance in the soviefy series is an immersive sequence of soviet songs, exploring specific strains in sots-realistic aesthetics. It includes simultaneous live video performance by Galina Shevchenko and vocal – by Dania C4e, musicians and open choir. The performance takes place in two loosely aligned consecutive cycles.
Artists indulge in re-contextualization and deconstruction of soviet visual and conceptual tropes, and creation of a new suspended narrative perpetuity. In the process the artists contemplate features of the abandoned utopias and memetic persistence of discarded ideological experiences.
This is a one-night only performance, free and open to the public.
