The Cleve Carney Art Gallery is pleased to present the work of Chicago based artist Andy Young in a pop-up exhibition running May 16th – May 24th, 2019. Please join us for the reception on Sunday May 19th, 12pm – 3pm.
Through use of images of modern and iconic domestic consumption: the tube sock, fiber optic lamp remnants, over-the-counter skin products and the addition of a decrepit moronic smile, Andy Young’s assemblages propel us to simultaneously smirk and shudder. It’s all familiar, but slightly off, unsettling.
Young’s skilled and balanced investigations taunt us; Is it absurd to be an artist? To practice art when so much is wrong with the world? Is art futile? We think not, but what do we know?
‘My work contends with the divide between the act of aesthetic production and the continuing failure of human beings to live up to our stated ideals. The absurd nature of this endeavor is not a useless task, but is neutered when compared to the evolving eco-situation of our planet and the continuing regression from the tenets of our liberal society. By using a wide range of media, (from hand crafted objects to large scale digital output,) I construct a personal investigation into these issues. This is built from the fragments and mash-ups of memories and generalizations of things experienced, and hopes to find faith; both in the process of “making” and, by proxy, in Humankind itself.’
