The Uncanon Artist Talk series seeks to center artists of color who’s work delineates/ interrogates the European Western Art Canon. In this mission we’ve included artists like Keijuan Thomas, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, En Iwamura and more.
We are excited to announce the participation of JENN NKIRU!
Jenn has recently directed videos for Kamasi Washington (Hub-Tones), Neneh Cherry (Kong) and The Carters (Apesh*t) and is currently working on the fourth and final film in the ‘Second Summer of Love’ series in collaboration with Frieze/Gucci, traces the lineage of techno via its birthplace in Detroit and later innovation in Berlin.
Nkiru is also known for her groundbreaking film ‘Rebirth Is Necessary’ in which she pieces together dreamlike portraits with stunning archival footage that includes Afrofuturism pioneer Sun Ra and revolutionary organization the Black Panther Party. She says “It’s where I got to reconcile my worlds—the material and the spiritual, the human and divine. This film is jazz; black magic in motion. I hope it can be a source of inspiration, affirmation and healing to others as it has been to me, especially the black diaspora.”
