Art, Illusion & Control in the Roman Villa
@ The Art Institute of Chicago
111 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60603
Opening Thursday, February 21st, from 6PM - 7PM
The Luminaries are the ICAA Chicago-Midwest Chapter’s newest group for young and emerging professionals. This month, please join The Luminaries as we gather for a lecture at the Art Institute of Chicago! Free, first-come first-serve admission to the event, and a cash bar at Terzo Piano immediately following.
Richly decorated with frescoes and mosaics, Roman villas provide an ideal context for considering the role of art in the relationships between the ancient Roman elite and their slaves. Join Lea K. Cline, Associate Professor of Art History, Illinois State University, as she examines one Roman villa (Villa A at Oplontis, near ancient Pompeii, Italy) from the perspective of its slave occupants, exploring the dynamic relationships that existed in the context of a working villa and challenging the idea that these spaces had one function and one audience.
This event is presented by the Classical Art Society. The event is free with museum admission. Museum admission is free for Illinois residents every Thursday from 5 – 8pm, including during this event. Please bring proof of residency – any form of ID with an Illinois address listed is sufficient.
