Sarita Garcia: Fantasyscape: Saturating the Familiar

@ Adler & Floyd

3537 S Western Blvd, Chicago, IL 60609

Opening Saturday, February 23rd, from 7PM - 10PM

On view through Saturday, March 16th

Adler & Floyd is excited to show new work by Sarita Garcia.

Informed by architectural spaces, Garcia’s work references street objects and vendor materiality through the use of textiles, prints and repeated patterns. Through archiving images of vernacular culture such as signage, foods, markets and shop stands, these recordings become a catalog to document the familiar. By fragmenting such imagery of cultural hubs, Garcia abstracts to create “fantasyscapes” that remix the reality of these spaces. With having bright colors and screen prints of common objects, Garcia attempts to talk about consumerism, identity and stereotypes. Garcia hopes to showcase a vocabulary of her own culture and iconography as a means to empower these spaces.

Sarita Garcia is a Visual Artist and Arts Educator born and raised in the West Side of San Antonio and currently working in Chicago. Garcia received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Garcia has presented her work in the National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago Art Department, Sullivan Galleries, and STNRD Exhibitions. Garcia has been featured in Chicago Tribune and recently Hyperallergic.
