Join us, February 21, 2019, for the opening reception of Chungking Mansions: A world unto itself
Chungking Mansions: A world unto itself features new work by Jonathan Michael Castillo created in Hong Kong and funded by the Stuart R. Abelson Award. With a photography based practice Castillo describes his work as social documentary with a focus on immigration, community and place that utilizes portraiture and images of interior space. This work was made entirely within one building called Chungking Mansions in the Tsim Sha Tsui neighborhood of Hong Kong’s Kowloon Peninsula. As a central fixture of the immigrant community in Hong Kong, this building serves as a place of commerce, cultural heritage and community for a diverse group of people including longtime Hong Kongers, new immigrants, asylum seekers, refugees and travelers from across the globe. Regardless of where one comes from, Chungking Mansions offers a welcoming space to all.
This exhibition is partially sponsored by Columbia College’s Photography Department and the Stuart R. Abelson Graduate Research Fellowship. The Stuart R. Abelson Graduate Research Fellowship was established to encourage international travel among graduate Photography students while completing a specific project and to support the experience by assisting with the costs of travel.
