On view through Saturday, March 2nd
South Side Community Art Center is pleased to have Guest Curator, Leslie Guy and Guest Designer Dorian Sylvain collaborate on the exhibition, “Change the Canvas, Change the World: A Landscape of Cultural Discovery, funded by the Terra Foundation’s Art & Design Chicago Initiative. This exhibition proudly opens this Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 2pm. The atmosphere will create a celebratory reflection on the founding of the art center and it’s artists (known and not so known) and introduce the public to rarely seen gems of art in the center’s collection.
In the first half of the twentieth century, Chicago was being transformed by successive waves of black migrants from the rural South who brought visions of a better future and a desire to find a home to freely express their creative potential—a place unbound by racial repression.
This exhibition explores the work and careers of the ground-breaking artists, such as Margaret Burroughs, Gwendolyn Brooks, Langston Hughes, Eldzier Cortor, Charles Sebree, Gordon Parks, Archibald Motley, Katherine Dunham, and Elizabeth Catlett, who created the South Side Community Art Center and made the city a hub of black cultural life.
We look forward to inspiring everyone while educating the community on the value of African American art and culture.
