gallery no one is excited to present the exhibition Year Zero by Amanda K. Guerra and Stephen Proski.
Year Zero presents a collection of photographs and hand-sewn constructions made by artists Amanda K. Guerra and Stephen Proski.
Working at disparate levels of the all too teetering spectrum, an architectural photographer and a painter (who cuts up their paintings to make new ones), try to find balance careening through the turbulence of our collective post digital existence. In doing so, both artists reference and utilize various elements of architecture on, off, and around the picture plane.
Exercising staggering acuity. Guerra transforms their subject matter – mostly buildings of Chicago and Kansas City, both lived and once lived – beyond recognition into starkly abstract, brutalist compositions that speak volumes to how bleak things have been, and to what degree they will become. Like whispers echoed onto concrete. The message is subtle to soften the blow.
Oscillating to the beat of chaos, Proski’s work is more reflexive: a deranged satire of Guerra’s desolate environments, or lack thereof. Tapping into a deeply personal, internalized language that has developed over the course of time, informed by a past/present gone mad. All at once abstract, decorative, and representational. Proski takes the buildings that are in Guerra’s photographs and flips them on their heads, creating comical tension through playful, yet careful consideration. Dissonance of infotainment.
