Chicago artist Megan Williamson is opening her solo gallery show of circus-inspired paintings and drawings at the Rare Nest Gallery on November 3rd. “Megan Williamson: Defying Gravity – The Circus Paintings” runs through January 12th, 2019.

Typically known for landscape work, “Defying Gravity” explores Williamson’s newfound love of the human form and the mystique of the circus. Inhabiting timeless landscapes, her art celebrates behind-the-scenes work and can be seen as a metaphor for the artist’s life. Williamson’s collection is filled with virtuoso scenes of circus rehearsals. They epitomize all that is best in her work: complex and layered compositions, masterful handling of color and intelligent narratives. While Williamson is inspired by the formidable legacy of circus-related art, she has created her own, personal vocabulary of acrobats, horseback riders, animals and the iconic striped tents.
