Gallery Talk: âThe Circus Age: Culture and Society Under the American Big Topâ by Professor of American Studies Janet Davis, Saturday, December 1, 2.00pm
Deliberate, effective, and finely calibrated, the distortions serve a scene that is incongruous but somehow wholly convincing. With her fluid brushwork, extraordinary color sensibility, and imaginative presentation of the figure, Williamson suggests that painting itself just could be the most exhilarating dare-devil act of all.

Chicago artist Megan Williamson is opening her solo gallery show of circus-inspired paintings and drawings at the Rare Nest Gallery on November 3rd. “Megan Williamson: Defying Gravity – The Circus Paintings” runs through January 12th, 2019.
Typically known for landscape work, âDefying Gravityâ explores Williamsonâs newfound love of the human form and the mystique of the circus. Inhabiting timeless landscapes, her art celebrates behind-the-scenes work and can be seen as a metaphor for the artistâs life. Williamsonâs collection is filled with virtuoso scenes of circus rehearsals. They epitomize all that is best in her work: complex and layered compositions, masterful handling of color and intelligent narratives. While Williamson is inspired by the formidable legacy of circus-related art, she has created her own, personal vocabulary of acrobats, horseback riders, animals and the iconic striped tents.
The press release for this event can be viewed and downloaded here, and a gallery of images can be found here. Artwork prices range between $500 and $6,000.
