Mixtape: Vol. 6
@ Stony Island Arts Bank
6760 S Stony Island Ave, Chicago, IL 60649
Opening Friday, September 21st, from 7:30PM - 10PM
For the sixth installment of Mixtape, Arts Bank Cinema will be broadcasting select shorts inspired by John H. Johnson and Johnson Publishing Co., including The Secret of Selling the Negro Market (1954), David Hartt’s Stray Light (2013) and much more treasurable footage.
When John H. Johnson opened the doors to the Johnson Publishing Co. headquarters on 820 South Michigan Avenue in 1972, he opened more than just a home for the empire he started just thirty years hitherto. He opened the doors to a novel triumph: being the first Black owner of a headquarters on the Magnificent Mile. Indeed, a magnificent victory. With their powerhouse media and publishing enterprise, the Johnson family opened more doors for Black creators, talent, voices and celebrities to craft culture. Whereas the building is no longer what it intended to be decades later; the office, the library, the cultural prominence has found a new home. A home on the Southside of Chicago, in a community that is deserving of the token of it’s Black excellence.
The Arts Bank’s Johnson Lounge will open to the public at 7pm with a concession bar and Johnson curated set. Showtime will begin exactly at 7:45pm.
