Designing Women: Refining Landscapes with Vivian Beer
@ The Richard H. Driehaus Museum
40 E Erie St, Chicago, IL 60611
Opening Thursday, June 14th, from 6PM - 7:30PM
Vivian Beer is one of two 21st century designers featured in The Art of Seating. Refining Landscapes will provide a window into her inspiration, skills, and creative process. “To me, design in its most inspiring sense is not a market, job, skill, or even a process. It is the patterns that interconnect things.”
Vivian Beer is a furniture designer and maker based in New England. Her sleek, abstracted metal and concrete furniture combine the aesthetic sensibilities of contemporary design, craft, and sculpture to create objects that alter viewers’ expectations of the domestic landscape.
Her work is included in the collections of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, MFA Boston, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Museum of Arts and Design, Currier Museum of Art, Gregg Museum of Art and Design, and public art collections of University of Maine Orono, Davidson College and the cities of Portland ME, Arlington VA and Cambridge MA. Beer has won numerous awards and residencies including the Ellen DeGeneres Design Challenge, John D. Mineck Furniture Fellowship, Penland School of Crafts Residency, multiple Wingate Artist Residencies, Museum of Glass, Pilchuck, a Research Fellowship at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, and was named a 2016 United States Artist Fellow.
