@ Ace Hotel Chicago
311 N Morgan St, Chicago, IL, 60607
Opening Friday, June 22nd, from 7 PM - 9 PM
On view through Sunday, September 30th
Mana Contemporary in partnership with Ace Hotel Chicago is pleased to present “Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime,” a performative installation of a fictional thrift store by artist Azikiwe Mohammed.
New Davonhaime – a location conceived by Mohammed – is an amalgamation of the names of the five most densely populated Black cities in America: New Orleans, Detroit, Jackson, Birmingham, and Savannah. “Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime” was created to serve as a safe space for Black and Brown people living in America.
Mohammed will be on site opening weekend performing as the thrift store owner, Jimmy, offering critical conversations, opportunities to collaborate on a digital music sharing project using New Davonhaime USB drives, and accepting donations from the public in the form of photographs to be added to Mohammed’s Black Community Family Albums. These archives offer an intimate and nuanced portrait of Black lives both contemporary and past.
Traces of “Jimmy’s Thrift of New Davonhaime” will exist throughout the hotel, including a custom Spotify playlist, New Davonhaime merchandise in the Ace Hotel Store, and a one-of-a-kind cocktail developed by Mohammed for the exhibition.
