Join us for the opening reception of Chicago-based artist Sarvin Haghighi at Art NXT Level Projects.
As a child, Iranian artist Sarvin Haghighi saw eight years of Iran-Iraq war. She remembers the negative graffiti decorating the walls of Tehran.
Now in her art installations, the artist paints the Farsi word for “love” in repetitive calligraphy across the walls. A strong believer in the power of words, Sarvin hopes to reverse the negative connotation of graffiti, creating instead a peaceful space that invokes dialogue.
This is just one of the ways the artist, who currently lives in Chicago, merges the old with the new, the east with the west. In a delicate balance, Sarvin pays homage to tradition, embracing her childhood nostalgia while also providing cultural commentary on a woman’s experience in the contemporary Middle East.
Inspired by the colors of Persian rugs and the 13th century Persian poet, Rumi, Sarvin reimagines Farsi calligraphy and architectural Islamic designs through gold leaf and bold lines, capturing an aesthetic of a culture too often represented through the chaotic, short-sighted lens of war and political turmoil.
Sarvin’s art has been shown in Europe, Asia and the United States. Her work remains an amplified, unified voice of many who long for peace and freedom.
