In this hands-on workshop, licensed clinical social worker Shipra Parikh will share practical strategies for trauma-informed teaching and guide participants through a process of skill sharing and devising solutions to common classroom challenges.

Focusing on K-8 students, this workshop will encourage educators to deeply consider their role in the classroom and will orient them toward a more developmentally-attuned teaching practice rooted in the life experiences of teacher and student alike. Through a combination of lecture, interactive feedback, and working groups, teaching artists will learn how to implement best practices, to think more flexibly, and to lead with empathy in the classroom and beyond. In small working groups, teaching artists will develop strategies to address peers’ individual case studies and share lessons learned from successes they have experienced.

Following the workshop, teaching artists are welcome to stick around for a BYO Lunch from 1:00 – 2:00pm in order to continue to connect with their peers and continue the conversation.

This workshop is presented by Chicago Artists Coalition in partnership with Hyde Park Art Center.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
-Learn best practices for fostering an inclusive space of creative expression and dialogue within the classroom.
-Develop strategies for addressing challenges in the classroom through small groupdiscussion.
-Craft age-appropriate responses to young people that support their developmental needs in the classroom based on a relational trauma lens.
-Identify practical resources and beneficial communities to support ongoing growth of teaching artists’ practice.

FACILITATOR BIO
Shipra Parikh, PhD, LCSW, is a clinical social worker, social justice advocate, and scholar. Her work includes therapeutic services to children and families impacted by micro and macro level trauma, including sexual and physical abuse, community violence, and developmental traumas experienced intergenerationally, or through the immigration/acculturation process. She also works as a lecturer at the University of Chicago School of Social Service administration, teaching in the areas of trauma treatment, participatory action research movements, and developmentally driven justice work, informed by how human beings evolve across the lifespan and within societies. She is inspired by self-expression in any form and participatory work, especially work involving questions of identity (race, class, ethnicity, educational access, ability) and the creation of opportunities to engage in community driven dialogue. Her work outside her home also mirrors her work inside her home – she is schooled in daily expressions of social justice and equity by her three primary co-collaborators – her partner and their two children.
