Hank Willis Thomas is “America’s great protest artist.”
– The Guardian

Join the renowned conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas for a conversation on the ways in which his work has addressed advertising, race, gender, and class for the past twenty years. Thomas will address his politically charged work and the Block Museum exhibition Hank Willis Thomas: Unbranded. The exhibition brings together selections from two bodies of work: Unbranded: Reflections in Black by Corporate America 1968-2008 and Unbranded: A Century of White Women 1915-2015. By digitally removing all text and product names from advertising the artist allows the resulting images to stand alone, asking the viewer to question the assumptions underlying popular media, both past and present. His talk will be followed by a conversation with Huey Copeland, professor, Art History, Northwestern University.

FREE and OPEN TO ALL

This program is supported by a Block Museum Board of Advisors gift in the name of Patrick J. Graziose and by the Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities.
