Apr 1st 2018

Join choreographers Bebe Miller and Molly Shanahan for an informal discussion about their latest works, their joys and frustrations in the choreographic process, how they deal with post-premiere blues, and more. This discussion is aimed at artists who make dances, and anyone who might like to make a dance in the future, but all are welcome. Tasty snacks will be served. *Event ends at 5p.*

Bebe Miller
Bebe Miller has received four New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Awards and support from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, Guggenheim Foundation and many others. A Distinguished Professor in Dance at The Ohio State University’s College of Arts and Humanities from 2000–2016, Miller received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Ursinus College in 2009. Miller’s vision of dance and performance resides in her faith in the moving body as a record of thought, experience, and beauty. Her aesthetic relies on the interplay of a work’s idea, its physicality, and the contributions of company members to fashion its singular voice. Seeking to expand the language of dance, Bebe Miller Company’s work encompasses choreography, writing, film, video and digital media. Bebe Miller Company was formed in 1985; since then, Miller has created more than 50 dance works for the company that have been performed in nearly 400 engagements worldwide.

Molly Shanahan/Mad Shak
Molly Shanahan is the Artistic Director of Molly Shanahan/Mad Shak, the Chicago-based company she founded in 1994 to support her research in choreography, performance, and collaboration. Through her career, Molly has developed a distinctively fluid vocabulary with a singular purpose: to find and express the most unbridled of inner impulses. Molly is the recipient of two National Performance Network Creation Fund Awards, a Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist Award, and an Illinois Arts Council fellowship for choreography, among others. Her critically-acclaimed evening-length solo My Name is a Blackbird was listed as one of the “top ten dance moments of the decade” by TimeOut Chicago.

Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago
The Dance Center invites you to experience the “Process v. Product” festival this spring (2018). “Process v. Product” features six performances, artist discussions, panels, and blog posts from local artists. The festival invites choreographers, dancers, students of dance and audiences to consider and reflect on ideas around how and why the creation, practice and witness of dancing can be more than a product for spectators.
