Encounter: Nurturing Embodiment Through Ritual and Community/ An Interpretation of African Diasporic Ethos and Cultural Values in Contemporary Jazz Dance — A performance experience by former Chicago dancer/current teaching artist and choreographer Monique Haley, investigating the relationship of how dance supports the ritual and spirit of community in the African culture. Based on Haley’s graduate research surrounding a studio jazz practice that utilizes a framework of African Diasporic Ethos and cultural values. Encounter aims to build an internal connectivity and a strong self-identity in the physical body. Featuring professional Chicago-based dance artists and Western Michigan University dance students. Audiences can expect an interactive environment and a short post-show Q & A.
