A fundraiser and program release party for the Onion City Experimental Film and Video Festival will be held at The Hungry Brain in conjunction with Seth Vanek’s The Therapy Sessions. This is a free event which will include performative Q&A’s by one of our 2018 juror’s Amina Ross, and programmer Emily Eddy. Advance festival passes will be available for purchase and a fundraiser will be held to benefit Onion City. Therapy Sessions is where Chicagoans of taste and distinction gather to talk about grown-up stuff. Part talent showcase, part interview program, part confession booth, the show describes itself as a “talk show about feelings.” Each week, Chicago’s cultural movers and shakers take to the Hungry Brain couch to unpack, unburden, and unwind, under the guidance of “Chicago’s Favorite Fake Therapist” and highbrow lowlife Seth Vanek. The Onion City Experimental Film and Video Festival is a production of Chicago Filmmakers and takes place March 8-11. Onion CIty is one of the premier showcases of experimental and avant-garde film and video and will be presenting its 28th edition this year. Emily Eddy is a film, video, and digital media artist and curator based in Chicago, IL. She graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013, where she received her Bachelors in Fine Arts. She has been curating film, video, and new media works at the Nightingale Cinema in Chicago since 2013, and she has worked with the screening series and online video curation project Video! Video! Zine since 2016. Emily has curated and programmed screenings at many venues in Chicago, as well as Los Angeles, Reykjavik, Iceland, and her hometown, Portland Oregon. (headshot by Danielle Campbell)

Amina Ross is an interdisciplinary creator and educator. They work across mediums, shaping spaces that honor darkness and love through language, light based video installations, sculpture, and curatorial engagements. Amina studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has exhibited work at venues throughout Chicago, New York and Philadelphia. Ross has spoken on panels and taught workshops at a wide range of events and venues including Wayne State University, the College Arts Association Conference, the Alphawood Foundation, and Theaster Gates’ Black Artist Retreat. Amina was a part of Chicago Artist Coalition’s BOLT Residency in 2015-2016. They co-run a black and femme centering space in the Little Village, Chicago, called F4F and are co-lead artist of Teen Creative Agency at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. Amina is a founder of 3rd Language (2011-2015), queer arts collective. Additionally Amina runs the popular workshop and participatory performance series “Beauty Breaks”. (beautybreaks.info)
Amina is curator of the forthcoming project, ECLIPSING: The Politics of Night, The Politics of Light, a muti-media festival celebrating darkness (December 2017 – March 2018).
