One year after the 2016 presidential election, and one year before Illinois General Election and Congressional Midterms, we find our democracy in an unsettling predicament. Turnout is low both nationwide and statewide, approval of elected officials is at an all-time low, and our public institutions are failing to hold up their end of the social contract. Some may feel that morally, politically, and socially, our society is historically divided. At the same time, there is a groundswell of activists, advocates, artists, and citizens who want to stand up and make a difference.
For this teach-in style event, we will bring people together who have a common interest in making our politics better. We will further bridge the gap between art and activism, giving voice to the importance of the artist in a robust democracy. We will discuss what it means to be accountable, and how to wield the best tools for engaging. If you feel that you need to do more, if you have an urge to make change, and if you know you need to stand up for a just society, join Common Cause and Alphawood for a teach-in on civic engagement. Presenters Kristiana Rae Colon, Trevor Tejeda-Gervais and Juan Carlos Linares will address the most effective ways citizens can engage to create policy shifts that matter. Topics include: the artist as an activist, how successful policy like automatic voter registration is implemented, and strategies to mitigate displacement and gentrification. An engagement scorecard will be given to help participants with outlining strategies active during the year.
