The Secret Life of Indigenous Archives
@ Newberry Library
60 W Walton St, Chicago, IL 60610
Opening Thursday, November 9th, from 5PM - 7:30PM
The rich archival collections of the Newberry have inspired and sustained some of the most significant research and writing in Native American and Indigenous Studies, making it a central site of what we may call “indigenous Chicago.”
A panel of prize-winning authors (Lisa Brooks, Amy Lonetree, Tiya Miles, and Phillip Round) will reflect on their archival experiences, exploring the “secret life” of the indigenous archive: what haunts and/or comforts them as researchers, the unexpected intimacies, the unresolved questions, the wondrous discoveries, the feeling of kinship to the lives of others and the material traces they leave behind.
Co-sponsored by the American Studies Association Annual Meeting, this program is free to attend and no registration is required. The discussion, which begins at 6 pm, will be preceded by a reception at 5.
