5737 N. Rockwell is jazzed to host Stephanie Brooks, Zebadiah Arrington, Qais Assali and Jose Luis Benavides for the Third Terrain Biennial, October 1-November 15, 2017.

The 4 artists have created site specific artworks that respond to the architectural, environmental, historical, and local conditions of our home and landscape.

Qais Assali (b. 1987 Nablus, Palestine) is a visual artist, graphic designer, and instructor. He has worked as a faculty at Al Ummah Governmental College and other academic institutions for 7 years. Assali spent his childhood growing up in Sharjah before he moved back to Nablus where he was born. This created a complex combination in his personality represented in his work. Assali’s work has been internationally exhibited such as at Jeune création, Paris (2016); “One Day After”, solo exhibition at Akademirommet/Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo (2015); “Oslo Zones”, Tiradentes, Brazil (2016), Khan Al Wakala, Nablus (2016); “1948”. Assali has awarded with the 1st prize for Plastic Arts at Palest’In & Out 2016 festival. Assali is currently doing two masters programs: MA in Art Education at SAIC and MFA in Photography at Bard College in addition to working as a teacher assistant.

Jose Luis Benavides (b. 1986 Chicago, IL) is an artist, filmmaker, writer and arts educator. He has been a teaching artist with the National Museum of Mexican Art, Young Chicago Authors, Chicago Arts Partnership in Education and the Chicago Public Library. He has also taught at the Cook County jail system and is a project manager with the Illinois Deaths in Custody Project. His work has shown at The Nightingale, Links Hall, and Nitecap Cafe. He has recently been granted artist residencies with C.A.P.E and The Overlook Place. He completed his MFA in Studio Arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2017 and his BA in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Latina/o Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2008. Benavides was raised in Logan Square and is a pisces.
