YOU WILL NOT SEE ME: Video Art in unconventional spaces in Chicago
@ Various locations around Chicago
On view through Saturday, September 23rd
Aspect/Ratio Gallery’s project brings international video to Chicago at large. The selected work aims to bring an international roster of artists in order to situate Chicago within an expanded global network of durational arts practitioners. This exhibition is curated by Pia Singh and Jefferson Godard of Aspect/Ratio
‘You Will Not See Me’ brings together artists, performers and filmmakers to investigate the reception of video work in and through Chicago’s unchartered, unconventional art spaces. In order to investigate our relation to time, space and Chicago’s urban sprawl, we present a select showcase of video work embedded within locally specific histories, connecting works to the cultural context of each selected site, in an attempt to further an exchange of artistic dialogue between Chicago and artists from other parts of the world. Different sites will be temporarily activated through video work, creating a urban video laboratory that invites visitors to neighborhood cultural centers they may otherwise never visit, nor understand, as sites for extending the conversation we often situate in the visual arts. These video interventions will serve the public as well as the cultural spaces they are exhibited in to place a spotlight on the agency of video as a medium of political resistance.
Artists on view include Ashish Avikunthak, Wim Delvoye, Ana Maria Millán, Mika Rottenberg, and Sterling Ruby
Videos will be on view at locations across Chicago:
