boundary presents Triple Happiness, a group show featuring Annette Hur, Julie Lai, and Chinatsu Ikeda.

Hur, Lai and Ikeda, all women of Asian descent, explore how the politics and culture of representation are situated in or out of place related to body.

These compositions become abstractions of joy and happiness, derived from a philia of the senses that encompass the perceptual as well as the tactile.

Annette Hur embraces Modernist tenets in how she passionately utilizes the human face not for traditional portraiture but rather as the duality of Other versus Self. Her paintings exult the deconstruction and then assimilation of her identity, an inheritance of feminist approaches to making and freedom through a formalist celebration of the nonrepresentational.

The ceramics of Julie Lai evoke a sensuality of the psyche whereupon seemingly unrelated objects are bound, forced to connect despite natural tensions. Lai lovingly nurtures a whimsicality of process to reflect upon the substance of psychological and physical collusion. One may see the curiosity and romanticized, possibly arranged marriages, of materiality.

Chinatsu Ikeda loves life. Her installation of daydreams celebrate saturated colors and organic shapes that she collages to celebrate the minutiae of how, where and why we live in relation to what we should love. She recreates, reinvents, and reassembles the quotidian and domestic as ad hoc exquisite corpse. Demonstrating a quirky if not fantastical world that reminds us of the joy and awe we often overlook.

We welcome the audience to enjoy the visions Hur, Lai and Ikeda share in their love affair with medium, craft and vision.
