Join us for a reception to celebratethe the Student Union Galleries (SUGS) exhibition, “Blackbox: An Afrofuturist Opus” at the School of the Art Institute on Wednesday, May 3rd.

Huey Amaru, a member of Kinfolk Collective, a tribe of black interdisciplinary artists operating in Chicago, Atlanta, New Orleans and Philadelphia, will be presenting a lecture/discussion and screening on the principles and history of Afrofuturism.

“Blackbox: An Afrofuturist Opus” (April 28th, 2017-May 17th, 2017), is a discursive platform and group exhibition in three acts, that explores and makes visible the multidimensional ways that artists are engaging with strategies of Afrofuturism. Participating artists have contributed works across medium, constructing a landscape that evokes the sonic, visual, and literary expressions of Afrofuturism. The strategies observed and researched in preparation for the exhibition, will form the foundation for a forthcoming multi-year project: the development of an original Afrofuturist inspired opera.
