A mom hair wig, matching Winnie the Pooh overalls and shirt, the smell of banana chocolate chip muffins, the sound of spitting, the sensation of powder drying out your mouth, gargling, the sound of wet banana mush and spit smacking as it lands in a bowl, gargling, the taste of fresh baked muffins. An interaction between a family muffin recipe, its ingredients, and the mouth. Embodying the super mom and the mother bird, Holly carefully measures out each ingredient using the volume of their mouth.
Holly Arsenault’s work attempts to articulate twisty hard to put into words emotions and feelings or occasionally sensations, through actions with objects. Many feelings translate better to grunts or violent arm movements or the tension of thread wrapped very tightly around something rather than to something systematic like language. The objects in their work dictate the emotional actions of their performances. These actions in turn make narratives, understanding and making sense out of them is not important, whats important is that they are being told.
