BYOJ (Bring Your Own Journals) to this discussion and writing based teach in led by our own Bria Royal! We will collaboate together with mini prompts, questions, and writing around the theme “Confronting Trauma Through Storytelling & Black-Indigenous Mythology.” Come to learn, share, and grow together.
Bio – Bria Royal is a Black Boricua from the west side of Chicago who uses art and visual aesthetics as a mode for making meaning out of the world around her. She is the author of the Black Girl Mania web comic series and graphic novel (tbr June 2017), which explores the mind of an afro-futurista with bipolar disorder learning to navigate her new found multiplicity. Bria is also the author of Pussy Monster: The Lucid Dreams of a Vanishing Black Girl, creator of the Pocket Healing Zines series, and runs a blog of original animations called .GIFts from Bria Royal. Bria considers her paintings, comics, writing, and animation to be the result of a radical healing process that she hopes others will benefit from seeing unfold, and an attempt to construct intersectionally Black and Indigenous mythologies for ourselves and our future liberated descendants. Bria is also a 2016 graduate of Northwestern University, where she studied Communications, Film and Psychology, and she uses those fields to guide her approach toward creative modes of storytelling in digital landscapes. Bria does movement work throughout Chicago as a member of For The People Artists Collective and the People’s Response Team.
