Please join the Museum and Exhibition Studies graduate program at UIC for a talk by visiting scholar, V. Gina Díaz titled Curating Latinx: Toward Queer Decoloniality.
Systems of differentiation have been central to empire-building and rely on the visual realm to assess and attribute normative ideals. Museums and art history are among those culpable, thus they play a part in the fabrication of racialized, sexualized, and gendered “others.” However, powerful counters to those violent epistemologies have always existed alongside them. This presentation considers Latinx ontologies and knowings, creative ruptures, and the construction of new discourses around creativity and display. Specifically, what is mobilized in processes of defining, documenting, exhibiting, and celebrating Latinidad in art and in museums? What is queer decoloniality, and what are the moves it inspires?
V. Gina Díaz is a doctoral student in the Department of American Studies at the University of New Mexico, an undertaking she began while working as the Senior Curator at the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum.
Previous work includes positions with the Hayward Area Historical Society, the California Indian Heritage Center, and the Smithsonian Institution Latino Center.
Her interdisciplinary doctoral research, for which she has received support from the Ford Foundation, is about critical museum studies; feminist and queer art; and cultural politics in the Americas. She is currently a member of the Museums & Race steering committee and collaborates with Museums as a Site for Social Action (MASS Action).
