The Chicago Artists Coalition is pleased to present Ee Bang In / Person From Outside, a solo exhibition featuring BOLT Resident Annette Hur’s most recent works.
Are we to paint what’s on the face, what’s inside the face, or what’s behind it?

Annette Hur creates paintings and ceramics from the perspective of a small, Asian woman in a foreign environment who struggles daily with the decision to assimilate or to stand alone. In Ee Bang In / Person From Outside, the ‘face’ is considered as an emotive object that has long carried the dual symbolism of being both a mask and an entry point, simultaneously hiding and revealing. Playing with dualisms through her materials and subject matter, Hur uses the concept of the face as a framework to explore and question the dynamics between the identities she grew up knowing in South Korea and the new identities formed while living in the United States. Hur’s process of simplifying forms is in response to our human affliction of categorizing emotions and, to some extent, our identities. Using geometric shapes and lines to frame the canvas, Hur manipulates the familiar structure of the face to build a complex narrative world in which female figures are the dominant subject in place.
ARTIST BIO
Born in South Korea, Annette Hur has been living and working in Chicago since 2013. Hur is currently a resident at the Chicago Artists Coalition’s BOLT Residency. She has previously shown in exhibitions at SUGs – Gallery X; Zhou B Art Center; Heaven Gallery; Chicago Artists Coalition; the online art space, Mist Gallery; and her work was recently featured in the online art publication, Bad at Sports. Hur holds a BFA in Painting and Drawing from School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in Education from Ewha Womans University in South Korea.
