A Transformation of Things

Carrie Secrist Gallery is thrilled to present the second performance of A Transformation of Things, a performative series of events developed by multi-instrumentalist and composer Joe Adamik in conjunction with Slow Blossoming, an exhibition by artist Diana Guerrero-Maciá.
Mr. Adamik and invited guest drummers – Mikel Avery and Quinnlan Kurchner – will activate the gallery space by utilizing two specially made drum sets that occupy the floor of the gallery in a rotating series of percussive duets over the course of each performance date. Starting with a series of collected rhythms by Adamik, that may or may not be recognizable, the duets will use individual improvisational techniques that will build and develop over the course of 15 minutes, eventually arriving at the end in unison. The rhythmic mediation that results represents an experience for the audience that is communally shared as well as sonically and visually immersive.
The drum sets, designed by Guerrero-Maciá and Adamik and professionally fabricated by the C&C Drum Company, are central to the installation of Slow Blossoming. As sculptures, the drum sets represent the central thematic of the exhibition as the symbolic inclusiveness of a shared cultural experience. Activated, the drum sets become instruments, or tools, for the exploration of sound as it relates to the rhythm maker and the receiver of the sounds.
Adamik has invited a number of guest drummers to take part in A Transformation of Things. Each musician is noted for his or her particular style and influence. From backgrounds as diverse as rock and roll, jazz composition, classical and world percussion, these musician brings a unique background to the project with their own interpretive histories.
The final A Transformation of Things will take place January 14, 2017, 3 – 5 PM with invited musicians Avreeayl Ra and Dan Bittney
