The newly christened Carroll Avenue Art District Open Studios take place on Saturday November 12 and Sunday November 13, from 12 – 5pm. CAAD includes the Albany-Carroll Arts Building (319 N. Albany) and the West Carroll Art Studios (3200 W. Carroll). These centers of artistic activity in East Garfield Park provide working space for over 120 artists, designers and fabricators. Once a year, the artists open their studios and invite the public to explore their work and wares.
Special this year is a talk and a tour by City of Chicago Cultural Historian Tim Samuelson. On Saturday November 12, Samuelson will give a talk, “From Grommets to Dr. Strangelove, the history of the Albany-Carroll Buildings.” Sunday, November 13, Samuelson will lead a walk along this stretch of eclectic industrial history featuring Frank Lloyd Wright, and Egyptian-Revival architecture. Both talk and tour begin at noon, in the Albany-Carroll Building.
The Albany-Carroll building features Claudine Ise’s independent project space Goldfinch, with a group show with Nazafarin Lofti, Rana Siegel, Tina Tahir; and Barbara Koenen’s UNUM exhibit space with work from Buddha at the Hot Dog Stand. Peter N. Gray/Metal-i-Genics Studio, an artist and scientist who captures the inherent aesthetics of genetics, microbiology and physics in sculpture and paintings; and Sharon Bladholm/ Opal Glass Studio, with botanically-inspired art glass, ceramic and bronze sculptures and works on paper are based on scientific expeditions in the Amazonian rain forest.
The West Carroll Art Studios features the studios of Kelly Kaczynski, Esau McGee, Dutes Miller, artist and designer Lacy Coligan, Carron Little, and Arielle Marq among others.
