Chicago Printers Guild
1st Annual Publishers Fair

November 18 & 19

Since 2009 the Chicago Printers Guild (CPG) has cultivated print culture through monthly meetings of its members. The group aspires to bridge the gap between commercial printing and fine art printmaking and strives to bring awareness of print culture to the Chicago area through activity such as lectures, workshops, field trips and art exhibits. This year, the CPG announces its first annual publishers fair to be held at Elastic Arts in Logan Square.

Over the course of the two events, the CPG hopes to offer a strong platform of exchange for the public to intersect with artists who “make things print”. Friday, November 18, a kick-off gala will feature three guest speakers—namely local artist and director of Spudnik Press Cooperative, Angee Lennard; lithographer and Janet and Craig Duchossois Curator of Prints and Drawings at The Art Institute of Chicago, Mark Pascale; and artist and director of the Honolulu Printmakers, Duncan Dempster. The following day, Saturday, November 19, over 36 artists will be selling their own self-published print work in this intimate and highly versed first publishers fair.

Here, the public has the opportunity to purchase original artwork from the artists directly. The majority of the work showcased is extremely limited. Things will sell out, so come out early to attend. In addition, during the run of the event, a curated exhibition of selected work from the vendors will be on display in the gallery of Elastic Arts, of which a best in show will be selected by the guest speakers. Join us in celebrating the deep legacy of Chicago’s print and publishing history by actively attending and supporting artists in this ever exciting medium.

Featured Speakers: Angee Lennard, Mark Pascale, Duncan Dempster

Speaker Biographies:
Angee Lennard is an artist and teacher, but is best known for her work as the Founder and Executive Director of Spudnik Press Cooperative, a community-based art center in Chicago. Now in its ninth year, Spudnik Press has evolved from an experimental work/live space to a multi-facetted organization unique in its dedication to printmaking. Under Lennard’s leadership, Spudnik Press provides artistic opportunities to over 3,500 people a year through studio access, residencies, fellowships, classes, exhibitions, collaborative projects and public programs. She is surprisingly passionate about the parallels between art making and arts administration. She holds a BFA from SAIC.

Mark Pascale is a lithographer who has been active in the Chicago art world for more than thirty years, as a curator, researcher, and professor. Currently, he is Janet and Craig Duchossois Curator of Prints and Drawings at The Art Institute of Chicago, and concurrently Adjunct Professor of Art in Print Media, at School of the Art Institute. His recent contributions to the field include the exhibitions and catalog essays for Martin Puryear: Multiple Dimensions, Contemporary Drawings from the Irving Stenn Jr. Collection, and Jasper Johns: Gray, and Force of a Dream: The Drawings of Joseph Yoakum, published by and exhibited at The Art Institute of Chicago. Currently, he is working on exhibitions focused on the work of Saul Steinberg, Charles White, and others.

Duncan Dempster is a Honolulu-based artist and educator working primarily in print media. He is currently an instructor in printmaking at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, and is the executive director of Honolulu Printmakers, an 88-year old nonprofit arts organization dedicated to promoting print culture in the State of Hawaii. In addition to a personal studio practice, he has been involved in many collective printmaking projects involving community outreach, collaboration, and exteriorized studio strategies, most recently a project called .5ppi.
