Ervin A. Johnson: #InHonor
@ C33
33 E Congress Pkwy, Chicago, IL 60605
Opening Thursday, September 8th, from 5PM - 8:30PM
On view through Friday, October 7th
Please join us on Thursday, September 8 for the opening reception of #InHonor, an exhibition featuring the work of the 2016 DEPS Alumni Artist in Residence Ervin A. Johnson ’12. Through vivid and large-scale portraits, Johnson’s #InHonor celebrates Blackness while also speaking to the violence and destruction of police brutality.
By removing and reimagining the skin color of each of his featured subjects, Johnson’s photo-based, mixed media work asks: What does a digital approximation of skin color mean? What happens when it is physically removed and reapplied? Johnson’s work shows how his subjects’ faces are forever transformed, just as our world is with each loss of life.
The opening reception of #InHonor will feature an informal artist talk from Ervin A. Johnson ’12 in which he will discuss the works presented. Light refreshments will also be served.
