Future Timeless Workshop
@ Mana Contemporary Chicago
2233 S Throop St, Chicago, IL
Opening Saturday, May 28th, from 3PM - 6PM
Come play with various patterns and concept garments in a workshop designed to foster conversation around the future of everyday clothing.
Future Timeless is a research project lead by costume designer Courtney Schum and artist Chad Kouri of The Post Family. Inspired by modular garments, uniforms, androgynous styles and cross-seasonal pieces, the project attempts to combat the feeling of having nothing to wear in an overflowing closet by facilitating public discussion and development of concept pieces that can be worn multiple ways: dressed up or down, draped or knotted, loose or fitted, expressive or simplistic.
Participants are welcome to bring their favorite item from their closet in order to kickstart conversations around usability and personal comfort.
Courtney Schum is a costume designer with a particular interest in the ways by which clothing has affected, enhanced, and complicated our lives. A soon-to-be graduate of The Theatre School at DePaul University, her design work has been featured in multiple productions on campus, including the May 2016 world premiere of Caroline Macon’s The Women Eat Chocolate. Courtney has also been involved a number of local theatres in Chicago, including Steep Theatre Company and Chicago Dramatists. Most recently, she has served as an intern at ARC Gallery and Educational Foundation, one of the nation’s oldest non-profit, female-operated contemporary art galleries.
Chad Kouri is the co-founder of the Chicago-based art and design incubator, The Post Family. He previously served as Art Director for the Chicago-based, award-winning contemporary art magazine Proximity. Recognized as one of NewCity Chicago’s 2010 Breakout artists, his past work includes displays and collaborations with The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Johalla Projects, Chicago; The Rochester Museum of Fine Arts, New Hampshire; Toledo Museum of Art; Purdue University; Mission Cultural Center of Latino Arts, San Francisco; and Apexart, New York.
