Roman Serra: Solo Exhibition

Roman Serra states, “I strive to make images that are full of energy; abstraction is my voice, I use paint because it is fluid; it transforms and tells a story. Sometimes the physical process can become the focus of my work. I use certain processes because they are unique in their ability to make marks.” Serra also proudly admits to being influenced by an Asian painting style called Shan Shui. This style was popular among Chinese painters during the Song Dynasty in the tenth and the eleventh century. Shan Shui integrates landscapes of mountains, rivers, and waterfalls using ink and brush strokes. Serra’s work portrays mindscapes in his abstract paintings with western mediums and tools. Prak-sis is thrilled to present his solo exhibition during Asian Heritage Month for the month of May.
“My own observation of his work compares it with Dan Seak Hwa, a rising Korean artist, in the international art scene. Dan Seak’s work has been featured at Christie’s in New York. Dan Seak means monochrome paintings in Korean. Serra’s new paintings have minimized color patterns which abstract one’s psychological journey. I would also compare Serra’s minimized color usage with American Minimalism. However, Serra developed very unique texture and composition in his own formula. I have strong sense that his paintings open a new and impressive style.”

Roman Serra was born in Detroit, MI. Currently he resides in Chicago, IL. Serra attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago BFA-2008 and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts MFA-2011. Serra has won several awards and public commissions:
“9 pieces”, at Somerset Place, a uptown historical building; ” 7 pieces”, Managed Way, Troy, MI; and recently pieces for Axis Capital in Chicago.
He was awarded a prize at Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series in Detroit and Effen Vodka/Jim Bean Purchase Prize in Chicago.
Other public commissions include a collection for Trustees (4 pieces) of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts – Philadelphia, PA and collection for Trustees (1 piece) at The Flint Institute of the Arts – Flint, MI.
