Erik Salgado: Brick Paintings
@ The Egg
alley next to 2214 S Sawyer Ave. First garage on the left
Opening Friday, April 22nd, at 6PM
On view through Friday, May 6th
Erik Salgado is making site specific paintings on the bricks of The Egg. This work is inspired by the ephemeral quality of graffiti, as well as modernist and post-modern artists. The show will be up for two weeks, and when it’s over the walls will be buffed- and painted over to it’s original color.
This piece is from an ongoing series of objects called ‘vigin bricks’. A virgin Brick or virgin spot refers to a surface that has not been painted with graffiti before. In a city as saturated with graffiti as Chicago, the pursuit of finding the ideal place to paint drives the graff artists to find new and creative spaces. Taking this idea of the quest for the perfect spot to spray paint, Erik began searching for bricks to paint. The form of the pieces are often inspired and influenced by minimalist sculptures.
