Humans constantly face issues of scale. Whether we look inward or outward, we refer to our present form to understand size. Beginning as sperm and egg, our growth exponentially increases until we grow too fat, old and/or stubborn. As children, toys represent notions of holding animals, trucks and planets in our hands, or allowing them to be put in our noses. As tweens and teens, we are made to memorize tables of elements and maps of the world; places we may never directly experience – we begin to grasp scale in the abstract sense, through concepts and the intangible. When fully formed, we are further bewildered by the repercussions of the smashing atoms, splicing genes, climbing mountains, fighting in wars, and creating new life. If we expand our minds, we see the paradox of how the small effects the big and visa versa.
Artworks that address scale place the viewer into a process of reexamination of physical self to another. This lighthearted exhibition was spawned by an online video of a farmer holding a dinosaur bone in his front yard and exclaiming, “Holy cow! Look at the size of that thing!” Through this theme of shifting scales, the show examines how it affects the way a work of art is experienced. This group of artists employs size and distortion to evoke a variety of feelings by way of expanding, shrinking, bloating, or flattening objects and images. No matter where along the spectrum it falls, each piece will have you exclaiming, “Holy cow! Look at the size of that thing!”
