devening projects + editions is very pleased to invite you to the fall-season opening of Spirit of the Dead Watching featuring new paintings, sculpture, video and editions by Bradley Biancardi, Austin Eddy, Annie Hémond Hotte, Shara Hughes and Tracy Thomason.
An opening reception for the artists takes place on Sunday, August 30th from 4 – 7 pm; the exhibition continues until October 17th, 2015.
The reconsideration and filtration of Modernism has been an inevitability in contemporary art. The question is therefore, how does this reverence for the past contribute to a relevant conversation within a contemporary art practice? Are they contradictory courses or do they speak easily with one another? Are there similarities to our current human experience that also existed during the advent of modernism that are still influencing artistic decision-making in the same way?
The conversations surrounding these topics and occurring in the work of the artists in Spirit of the Dead Watching, act as a catalyst for relevant and lively responses. Annie Hémond Hotte, Austin Eddy, Bradley Biancardi, Shara Hughes and Tracy Thomason are all builders; organizing shape and material where characters, people and humanness emerge. Each artist works within an invented symbology and uses it to imply a sensation, illustrate an event and/or create a world.
Within the work of Spirit of the Dead Watching, we find discussions of ephemerality, timing, humor, figural interaction, story telling, spirituality, awkwardness, character building and things that fit and don’t fit; all ultimately portraying the mind as a structure and a system affected by its surroundings.
In addition to main exhibition, we’re excited to be featuring a series of new multiples made by the artists for Spirit of the Dead Watching. Be sure to check out these silk screen and wood block prints, mono-prints and tote bags available at the opening.
