@ threewalls
119 N. Peoria #2C, Chicago IL
Opening Saturday, December 13th, from 4PM - 6PM
Join us for the release of A. Laurie Palmer’s new book, “In the Aura of a Hole: Exploring Sites of Material Extraction,” published by Black Dog Publishing.
The author will speak in conversation with Rebecca Zorach, an art history professor at the University of Chicago. Books will be available on site for purchase, courtesy of the Seminary Co-op Bookstore.
The book documents A. Laurie Palmer’s decade-long inquiry into extraction sites across the US. Written from the perspective of an artist for whom social life and material matters are inextricably linked, this work of art-as-research investigates places and processes normally hidden from public view. As it unfolds, connections between extraction sites and issues of collective concern (including, for example, unemployment, environmental justice, industrial agriculture, First Nation rights, and military aggression), this poetic geography also offers observations scaled to the senses, refusing a strict separation between industrial materials and the embodied “I” that observes and experiences where and how they are produced.
A. Laurie Palmer teaches in the Sculpture Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her works are in the collections of institutions such as the City of Linz, Austria; the Smart Museum of Art, Chicago; The University of Chicago; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the University Galleries, Illinois State. Palmer’s solo show “Still, yet, further, again” was on view at Threewalls in 2012.
This event is co-sponsored with the Seminary Co-Op Bookstore.
