Hidden Dog is proud to present Fantasy Zone: K-9 ISLAND:
Fantasy Zone: K-9 ISLAND is centered around the complicated relationship between figuration and abstraction. Karolina Gnatowski’s fiber work is utilized as an intermediary between Sharmila Banerjee’s figurative illustrations and Andrew Holmquist’s abstract compositions in order to create a conversation between not only figuration and abstraction, but painting, drawing and fibers as well.
Sharmila Banerjee (Berlin / Oslo) is an illustrator who is showing her work for the first time in the United States. In 2006, she earned her Design Diploma in Interdisciplinary Design Studies at the Köln International School of Design, Germany. In 2010 she would go on to receive her MFA in Graphic Design & Illustration/Storytelling at Konstfack in Stockholm, Sweden. Sharmila creates dynamic figurative illustrations, drawing in a style calling to mind both Chris Ware and Jean “Moebius” Girard. Sharmila has shown across Europe and has been published in ZEIT Campus, Nobrow, Orang and more.

Karolina Gnatowski is a Chicago based fiber artist who uses a multitude of crafting techniques to create highly referential pieces that immerse the viewer not only in the installation but also in the dense information found throughout her work. The nature of her practice undermines concepts of figuration in a classic sense, using material as image, while harkening back to it in other ways through the use of plaster hands, glass eyes and other such materials. Gnatowski received her BFA in Fiber and Material Studies at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 2002 and her MFA in the same subject at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007.

Andrew Holmquist is a Chicago based painter dealing primarily with geometric and figurative abstraction. Using dynamic brush strokes and bright colors, Holmquist is able to effectively create three dimensional space in a 2 dimensional medium. Andrew received a BFA in Painting and Drawing from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2008 and an MFA in the same subject this year.
