Judy Ledgerwood: Chromatic Patterns
@ Smart Museum of Art
5550 S Greenwood Ave., Chicago IL
On view through Sunday, July 20th
Chicago-based artist Judy Ledgerwood creates an immense, site-specific wall painting for the Smart Museum.
The painting is comprised of horizontal bands of boldly colored patterns that run across the large central wall in the Smart’s reception hall. The work responds to both the soaring, symmetrical architecture of the space and, in its repeating patterns, the design of Louis Sullivan’s elevator screens for the Chicago Stock Exchange building (two of which are on view in the lobby). While Chromatic Patterns will be hand-painted in tempera directly on the wall, it will, in the artist’s words, “hang tapestry-like” with drooping and irregular edges that assert the primacy of the painting over the clean lines and modernist architecture of the space.
