Community Supported Collecting is about collecting from the artists’ perspective. Our Sunday Studio tour includes intimate studio visits with Community Supported Art artists, introducing why and how to collect on a budget, with a passion and without fear.

Featured artists:

Alberto Aguilar is a Chicago artist who’s work was most recently featured as part of Homebodies at the Museum of Contemporary Art in 2013, in which he put a bed, a carpet and a dining room table in a main lobby of the MCA for visitors to interact with and guest artists to present on. He was a 3Arts 2011 awardee and has recent solo exhibitions at Steven Zevitas Gallery, Boston MA and at Elmhurst Art Museum. He is currently a tenured instructor of studio art at Harold Washington College in Chicago. With his family, Aguilar lives near Midway airport–directly under the path of airplanes departing and arriving. Upon moving there he quickly learned not to try to talk over them as they pass by.

Heather Mekkelson is a sculptor and installation artist and 2012 Artadia awardee. Her solo exhibitions include threewalls (Chicago), Roots and Culture (Chicago), Old Gold (Chicago), and STANDARD (Chicago). She has had her work published in Art Journal, Broadsheet (The Contemporary Art Center of South Australia), Time Out Chicago, Chicago Tribune, and Artforum.com. Working with images from public disasters, Heather Mekkelson catalogs and reconstructs the fragments, “composing” ruins from hand-crafted debris within the framework of art historical, Romantic catastrophes like Gericault’s Scene of the Deluge (1818) and Raft of the Medusa (1818-1819).
