Bert Green Fine Art is pleased to present our third solo show by San Francisco-based artist Barron Storey and our first solo show by Chicago-based artist Robb Stone.
Barron Storey, widely known and admired around the world for his contributions to illustration and the graphic novel tradition, has been creating illustrated journals for many years, from which a pair of books have been published, and which are the source material for many gallery and museum art exhibitions. In this show Factum 1 and Factum 2, Storey is referencing a project by Robert Rauschenberg in which he created 2 versions of the same artwork. For Storey, this was a watershed moment in his understanding of the nature of art and perception. Storey takes source images from his own journals, duplicates them and creates non-identical painted copies, displayed side by side, as pairs of images. Displayed as diptychs, these works reference digital technology and the nature of reproduction yet rely entirely on the artistâs hand.
An illustrator, graphic novelist, and noted educator, Barron Storey has created award-winning artworks for the covers and pages of Time, National Geographic, Saturday Review, and The Sandman: Endless Nights, among others. The artist’s paintings are held in the collections of the National Air and Space Museum, the American Museum of Natural History, and the National Portrait Gallery. Barron’s published journals include Life After Black and The Marat/Sade Journals.
Robb Stone sources images from relentless torrent of social media and the news, selecting those which resonate with his interest in the intersection of classical imagery and contemporary masculinity. Using materials such as bleach and silk, he isolates and simplifies the figural forms, highlighting how our contemporary visual culture of endless gazing at massive amounts of visual stimuli has transformed the traditions of photography and art history, and replaced the literacies and mythologies of our prior civilization.
A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Stone has exhibited nationally and is in the collections of The Kinsey Institute, Bloomington, Indiana, and the Indiana University Art Museum, Bloomington, Indiana.
There will be an Artists reception on Saturday, May 11 from 5-8 pm (both artists will be present), and a Closing reception on Saturday, June 29 from 5â8 pm, with an Artistâs talk by Robb Stone at 6 pm. Gallery hours are WednesdayâFriday 11â6 and Saturday 12-5, or by appointment at other times.
All gallery events are free and open to the public. Additional exhibition information, press releases and high resolution images may be found at the gallery website at http://bgfa.us.
