Opening Sunday, April 28th, from 4PM - 7PM
On view through Sunday, June 23rd
The Renaissance Society presents “Forlesen”, a solo exhibition by William Pope.L, on view April 28 to June 23, 2013. Join us for the opening reception on Sunday, April 28 from 4-7pm with an artist talk from 5-6pm.
Titled after a short story by the celebrated science fiction writer Gene Wolfe, “Forlesen” will feature a new body of work (drawings, sculpture, and a video installation). This exhibition will feature a 10 foot high wooden sculpture entitled “Du Bois Machine,” approximately 50 new “skin set” drawings, and a video work of abstract imagery that is derived from bargain bin VHS tapes. Pope.L was intrigued by the structure of Wolfe’s story, which resembles a parable whose lesson is illustrated symbolically and is wholly open to interpretation. Rather than plot-driven, “Forlesen”, the short story, is a string of bizarre episodes that add up to a story only through the reader’s subjective decoding. Pope.L wanted to create an installation with this same effect: the relationship of the art works within the installation to one another, and ultimately to the exhibition as a whole, is ambiguous and continually in question.
This event is FREE and open to the public.
