PSA Projects is pleased to announce the opening of the fiction is outside by Dan Paz. The project space will host an opening reception for the public Sunday, April 28th from 8-10PM. The work will be externally screened Sundays from April 28th to May 19th for two hours beginning at Civil Twilight. Full details and a screening schedule below.

the fiction is outside is a series of found stills documenting one family’s suburban migration and assimilation in the 1970s. The images are curated here to mirror the artist’s grandafther’s original, disorienting sequence. Drawing on the montage format’s ability to both create and challenge continuity, architectural images of Florida are set against images of Long Island interiors to offer a view of how linearity is narrativized and altered in family histories.

Dan Paz is a Chicago-based artist using video and formal modes of production to look at representations of identity in broadcast media and viewership. Dan received an MFA from The University of Chicago in Visual Arts and a BFA from The Atlanta College of Art in video, minoring in photography. Exhibitions and screenings include: Im with you at Hayward Gallery London, UK; 4th Annual Camaguey Video Festival in Camaguey, Cuba; Band of Outsiders curated by Catherine Sullivan at CAA Media Lab in NY, NY; Immigrant/Emigrant at Angels Gate Cultural Center curated by Lara Bullock in San Pedro, CA; Archetype Drift at Johalla Projects curated by Jason Lazarus; The Great Refusal :Taking on New Queer Aesthetics at The Gene Siskel Film Center, Chicago, IL; Pillowtalk at Peregrine Program curated by Natalie Schuh and Stevie Greco in Chicago, IL; Eyeball Witness at Roots and Culture Contemporary curated by Scott Wolniak in Chicago, IL. In 2010, Dan was the recipient of the Ann Metzger Award for Prints. In 2012, Dan was the recipient of the Links Hall Link Up residency and grant for the co-creation of the project Arte no es fácil. Later that year, Dan received The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundations Connection grant for Arte no es fácil. In 2012, Dan was the recipient of the Critical Fierceness Grant, in collaboration with DoubleDJ. Dan has published twice with Shifter Magazine, issues #19 and #20.

PSA Projects is an exterior alternative project space located at 2509 N. Lawndale Avenue, in Logan Square. Started in September 2012 by Casey Smallwood and Andrew Cantrell, PSA Projects shows site-specific, time-based visual works of commercial length, by emerging and established artists. The works are projected through the front window of the space, to be viewed within the time of commuting (walking, cycling, driving, or otherwise moving by). Both the space and the works explore an uneasy spectatorship situated between absorption and distraction, publicity and privacy, and movement and habitation.
