Christopher Ottinger: Ghost Machine
@ Chicago Artists' Coalition
217 N. Carpenter Street
Opening Friday, April 12th, at 6PM
On view through Thursday, May 2nd
BOLT Resident Christopher Ottinger’s work investigates technological objects, their histories, and how they reorder the senses and the psyche. In this solo exhibition of new sculptural works, Ghost Machine, Ottinger explores what has arguably become the most ubiquitous of all technical objects: the screen itself. Ranging from the pre-cinematic to the holographic, the analog to the digital, each of the works in Ghost Machine draws the viewer’s attention to the screen itself, how it mediates between humans and information, as well as between the machines themselves. The exhibition creates a space for viewers to re-think their relationships to screens, images, and the projection systems behind them. Such an investigation is important because if technological objects condition the human psyche, then their ghosts are also ours.
There will be an opening reception on Friday, April 12, 2013, and the exhibition will run through May 2, 2013.
