Artistic surfaces include paper, canvas, wood, metal, clay, fabric, glass, found objects, or the outside of anything that an artist can build work upon. Artists activate a surface by applying their medium to the selected substrate using their specific techniques and skills. Transforming the surface could include actions such as: carving, drawing, enameling, glazing, painting, plastering, pouring, printing, staining, upholstering, or varnishing. Finished surfaces are often described as matte or gloss; textured or patterned; soft or hard; and rough or smooth.
What discourse surfaces through these layers of techniques and materials? Perhaps the final surface exposes and unveils something submerged below it. What transpired and materialized in the artist’s process now appears to the public in Surfaces.
