“Semaphoria: An Artist’s Language” is an intimate look into abstract work that takes influence from Native American art, Cubism, architecture, ceramics, and Graphic art.
As a “modernist classist,” Carole Stodder creates work with strong design elements within the picture plane, a person would not be a fault for drawing comparisons between Stodder’s work and 20th century artist, Charles Demuth. Both artists work with typographic and strong design elements within the picture plane to create an energy which bursts forth from the boarders of the frame. The total spectrum of art serves as an incubator for Stodder’s art, contributing to explorations into the art of plane surface design. The visual concept realized first through drawing and collage before being transferred onto canvas. Not until after extensive fine-tuning, is paint applied to the design. Stodder’s latest work utilizes graphic content such as letters, numbers, and symbols from the urban environment. The resolution of all these elements in relationship to one another achieves a composition that makes a statement unique to each canvas.
